- 7:30aCasual/102222.022.00Sunday Morning Wake Up RideDave Higgins
Steve is away this week, so I'm filling in for him.
We usually have riders going at various speeds; I'll be riding sweep to make sure nobody gets dropped. Traditionally we stop mid-ride at the Home Front Cafe in Altamont for coffee, bagels, or something else. They recently replaced the flimsy fabric chairs on their patio with sturdy metal ones, so nobody has to worry about an embarrassing collapse. (Phew! LOL)
Be sure to download the route to your phone, or print it at home to bring with you.
The forecast is looking great, so let's ride!

Road trip...
Forty-five miles of rustic carriage roads, the gift of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. and family, weave around the mountains and valleys of Acadia National Park. Rockefeller, a skilled horseman, wanted to travel on motor-free byways via horse and carriage into the heart of Mount Desert Island. His construction efforts from 1913 to 1940 resulted in roads with sweeping vistas and close-up views of the landscape.
Here's an opportunity to experience these fabulous roads by bike. Join a group of club gravelers for a 30 mile ride along the carriage roads. The group will definitely stop occasionally to take photos and regroup. The route has about 2,200 feet of elevation gain. This will be a relaxed ride to soak in the scenery along the Maine coast.
The roads were built to preserve the line of hillsides and save trees, align with the contours of the lands, and take advantage of scenic views. Approximately 16 feet wide, the carriage roads are an example of broken-stone roads commonly used at the turn of the 20th century. Gate lodges act as impressive welcomes to the carriage road system, stone-faced bridges span streams, waterfalls, motor roads, and cliff sides.
Today, the carriage roads have multiple-user groups as they did in the past. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and horse-drawn carriages share in the beauty, access, and safety of these auto-free roads across the park.
The ride rolls out from the Hull Cove Visitor Center at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 16. There is a fee to enter the park. The rain date for this ride is Tuesday, September 17, at 10:30 a.m. You can find a place to bunk in Bar Harbor, nearby Ellsworth or another location.

- 10:30aSport/124343.243.20Canajoharie, Fort Plain - Two Plateaus revisitedBill Little
Join us for a fall ride from Canajoharie up both sides of the Mohawk River Valley. I hosted this back in June and, with good weather, we enjoyed a nice, long ride with a few climbing challenges, all amidst the farms, forests and fields of the Mohawk Valley. There is a Stewarts in Fort Plain, at about the half way point, for refilling bottles, buying snacks and bathroom breaks. This ride is slightly longer than the June ride, about 4 miles more, to avoid route a significant section of Route 163 as we leave Fort Plain. This comes with a few hundred feet of additional climbing, which, at summer's end we should all be prepped for. With the promise of another day of fine weather, we'll hopefully take in some changing autumn folliage. That being said, a forecast of rain/foul weather at the start will cause cancellation.

- 11aGravel/92928.628.60Green Mt. Gravel Grab: PoultneyChet Lasell
Back for its 30th year, the Green Mountain Gravel Grab two-day gravel palooza kicks off in scenic Poultney. This loop offers gravelers little of everything including rolling gravel roads, some flats, some climbing, and even some Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail action. Roughly 75 percent of the route uses classic Vermont gravel roads including the D&H trail. Total climbing? It's in the 1,814 ft. ballpark. The full route will be revealed closer to October 3.
Day two has us visiting West Rupert, Vt., where we will check out some dirt roads in NYS as well as southern Vt. You want gravel? You got it! Join the gravelers for two fun-filled days. Can only make it one day? No problem. Join the fun.

- 11aGravel/82727.427.40Green Mt. Gravel Grab: West RupertChet Lasell
Day two of the Green Mountain Gravel Grab visits the terrific dirt roads around West Rupert, Vt. Today's ride is about 27 miles and we'll do some climbing along the way (hey, it's Vt. remember). Nothing too taxing. Total elevation gain is in the 2,300 ft. neighborhood. After completing the route, we will visit Sherman's store for a snack and to trade stories about this year's gravel grab. Sherman's might even have its famous macaroni and cheese dish warming in the crock pot. Yum. Sherman's is one of the better rest stops during or after a ride.
Nearly 70 percent of this route uses classic Vt. gravel roads, as well as terrific dirt roads in NYS. Will add the route to this listing closer to October 4. Don't miss an opportunity to ride gravel in Vt. and in eastern NYS.

- 10aGravel/102928.728.70Autumn Gravel In The BerkshiresDave Higgins
Over the past couple years I've ridden in a gravel event run by the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (a big fundraiser for cancer research). In those rides I've learned that there's some great gravel riding in the Berkshires. Our route will be a slightly shorter variation of the PMC's short route. It's about 29 miles, with almost 2,600 feet of climbing. It offers 40% gravel roads, as well as one short and easy double track section. There is also a cafe stop option about halfway through the ride, in West Stockbridge.
The ride starts and finishes at the Stockbridge Town Beach* in Stockbridge, MA. Expect some climbs that are long, some that are short but steep, with all followed by exhilarating descents. We will be riding through forests, past farms and ponds, and along some of the prettiest country roads in the Berkshires. And the fall colors should be near their peak!
For those so inclined, after the ride we can visit one of the many restaurants in nearby Stockbridge or Lenox.
(*Pending approval by the Town of Stockbridge. Otherwise we'll be riding from Lenox.)
